Project Description

NINJA
MARMOT

This trail is big. It’s fast. It’s fun. It’s rated double black.

The airs are huge but they’re safe. Transitions are long; in fact, Ninja Marmot is almost one long series of interconnecting radiused transitions. Stay off your brakes, look ahead and hold on. The takeoffs will lead you to the landings, the landings will lead you to the takeoffs, and the berms will plaster a smile on your face.

Built by Jed, Parkin and Pete, the trail evolved in design as it became obvious that the layout could support bigger jumps than we initially visualized. Construction took place at the ideal time, with Big Sky’s rocky decomposed Andesite soil still shedding spring runoff. Although challenging, this allowed the excavators to heavily compact the soil, which is critical to a large scale build of this sort. By the time finish work was happening, the spring rains had passed and we were able to smooth the final tread in dry conditions.

“Ninja Marmot is a jump masterpiece… begging to be ridden repeatedly at high speed.”

Weaving through a Big Sky forest of spruce, lodgepole and fir trees, Ninja Marmot is a testament to the benefits of low angle trail layout. With numerous large grade reversals, the trail averages 6% top to bottom but keeps riders moving plenty fast with virtually no braking.

The following spring required minimal follow up work, with a couple settlements on the larger features requiring reshaping, but in general Ninja is running better than ever.
